Physical weathering is the disintegration of earth material without undergoing a chemical change. Physical weathering results in increased surface area for chemical reactions to occur on.

Tsunamis

Tsunamis- results of underwater earthquake- Tidal Wave

Actually s and p waves traveling from the focus

P wave does damage since s wave disappears right away.

Damage done by a tsunami is not just water- it is the also the large

Amount of sediment that washes up and the huge amount of

Erosion that exists as the water washes everything away.

Typically we can be warned of a tsunami because the earthquake

Occurs and we can expect a tidal wave to come once we

Determine that the epicenter is below the water.

The focus of this class lesson was on how the Hawaiian Islands formed.  The lab focused on the direction and speed of the Pacific Plate and the age of the islands.   Click here for the Power Point.   Click here for the discovery networks virtual volcano.

Plate Tectonics

Plate Tectonics is a result of Convection Currents in the Mantle.  The plates cracked and continents drifted apart from the single Pangaea

Plate boundary-  region where two plates meet

Fault is a crack-  often the crack is on a plate boundary

Divergent boundaries- pull apart-  go in opposite ways which leave open areas for magma to fill in (this explains the sea floor spreading)

Convergent plate boundaries- push together- sometimes one over powers the other and one ends up going under the other ( this is subduction)

Often when we have subduction, we find a track or trail for magma to find it’s way toward the surface

Transform boundaries are when two plates try to pass each other by sliding past one another
